3 Packaging Tips to Prevent Shipping Damages

The supply chain moves fast, and if intermodal is being utilized, then the products are switched from one mode of transportation to another during the shipment. That means more handling, and the increased risk of damages.

Nothing is more frustrating than opening a package to find the contents smashed to smithereens. How can you package like a pro to prevent costly damages?

Here are our 3 biggest tips.

Test out new products

If you’ve been shipping the same cargo for awhile, then you’ve probably learned (through trial and error) how best to package the items without breaking them.

But, say you get a new product that you’ve never shipped before. Now is a good time to initiate a few test runs.

Take time to package them so you can work out the kinks to discover which materials and methods provide the most support and cushion.

Load them up and go for a short drive. That way, you get a solid idea of how best to stack or lay boxes to keep them from toppling over or banging into each other during the trip.

Be wary of moisture

This is a small detail that might get overlooked, but moisture can wreak havoc on your container and cargo.

When a truck is traveling over the road across borders into various regions, the climate and weather changes all the time.

Condensation builds up, causing container metal to corrode, warp and feed mold. Use desiccants to keep moisture from hurting your goods.

Go with quality

Sure, you may save money by going with the cheapest shipping supplies, but are they reliable? Invest in the proper packaging equipment, and don’t skimp on cushioning.

Going with pressure sensitive tape instead of regular tape will keep out odors, block moisture and offer a stronger hold.

Don’t hesitate to consider pallets, as these can add an extra buffer against sliding in a container and give boxes the support they need.
